As the mist leaves no scar
On the dark green hill,
So my body leaves no scar
On you, nor ever will.
When wind and hawk encounter,
What remains to keep?
So you and I encounter
Then turn, then fall to sleep.
As many nights endure
Without a moon or star,
So will we endure
When one is gone and far.

Come la nebbia non lascia cicatrici
Sulla scura collina verde,
Così il mio corpo non lascia cicatrici
Su di te, né mai ne lascerà.
Quando vento e falco s'incontrano
Cosa resta da tenere?
Così tu ed io c'incontriamo,
Poi ci giriamo e ci addormentiamo.
Come molte notti sopravvivono
Senza luna o stelle,

I Have Not Lingered In European Monasteries
and discovered among the tall grasses tombs of knights who fell as beautifully as their ballads tell; I have not parted the grasses or purposefully left them thatched.
I have not held my breath
so that I might hear the breathing of God
or tamed my heartbeat with an exercise, or starved for visions. Although I have watched him often I have not become the heron, leaving my body on the shore, and I have not become the luminous trout, leaving my body in the air.
I have not worshipped wounds and relics,
or combs of iron,
or bodies wrapped and burnt in scrolls.
I have not been unhappy for ten thousands years.
During the day I laugh and during the night I sleep. My favorite cooks prepare my meals, my body cleans and repairs itself, and all my work goes well.

che caddero splendidamente come raccontano le loro ballate;
Sebbene l'abbia guardato spesso
Non sono diventato l'airone,
lasciando il mio corpo sulla riva
e non sono diventato la trota luminosa,
lasciando il mio corpo nell'aria.
Non ho adorato ferite e reliquie,
o pettini di ferro,
o corpi avvolti e bruciati in pergamene.
I miei cuochi preferiti mi preparano i pasti,

I Heard Of A Man
who says words so beautifully that if he only speaks their name women give themselves to him.
If I am dumb beside your body
while silence blossoms like tumors on our lips, it is because I hear a man climb stairs and clear his throat outside the door. |
Ho sentito di un uomo
che pronuncia parole in modo così bello
che se solo dice il loro nome
le donne gli si concedono.
Se sono muto accanto al tuo corpo
mentre il silenzio sboccia come tumore
sulle nostre labbra,
Beneath My Hands
your small breasts
are the upturned bellies
of breathing fallen sparrows.
Wherever you move
I hear the sounds of closing wings
of falling wings.
I am speechless
because you have fallen beside me
because your eyelashes
are the spines of tiny fragile animals.
I dread the time
when your mouth
begins to call me hunter.
When you call me close
to tell me
your body is not beautiful
I want to summon
the eyes and hidden mouths
of stone and light and water
to testify against you.
I want them
to surrender before you
the trembling rhyme of your face
from their deep caskets.
When you call me close
to tell me
your body is not beautiful
I want my body and my hands
to be pools
for your looking and laughing.

Sotto le mie mani
i tuoi piccoli seni
sono i petti rovesciati
di passeri caduti che alitano.
Ovunque ti muovi
perché sei caduta accanto a me
perché le tue ciglia
sono le spine di piccoli animali fragili.
Temo il tempo
in cui la tua bocca
inizia a chiamarmi cacciatore.
Quando mi chiami vicino
per dirmi che
il tuo corpo non è bello,
voglio evocare
gli occhi e le bocche nascoste
della pietra e della luce e dell'acqua
affinché testimonino contro di te.
Voglio

Sit down, Master, on the rude chair of praises,
and rule my nervous heart with your great decrees of freedom. Out of time you
have taken me to do my daily task. Out of mist and dust you have fashioned me
to know the numberless worlds between the crown and the kingdom. In utter
defeat I came to you and you received me with a sweetness I had not dared to
remember. Tonight I come to you again, soiled by strategies and trapped in the
loneliness of my tiny domain. Establish your law in this walled place. Let nine
men come to lift me into their prayer so that I may whisper with them: Blessed
be the name of the glory of the kingdom forever and forever.
I lost my way I forgot to call on your name. The raw heart beats against the world, And the tears were for my lost victory. But you are here. You have always been here. The world is all forgetting, And the heart is a rage of directions, But your name unifies the heart, And the world is lifted into its place. Blessed is the one Who waits in the traveler’s heart for his turning. Poem #50, from The Book of Mercy THE GENIUS
For you
I will be an apostate Jew
and tell the Spanish priest
of the blood vow
in the Talmud
and where the bones
of the child are hid
For you
I will be a banker Jew
and bring to ruin
a proud old hunting king
and end his line
For you
I will be a Broadway Jew
and cry in theatres
for my mother
and sell bargain goods
beneath the counter
For you
I will be a doctor Jew
and search
in all the garbage cans for foreskins
to sew back again
For you
I will be a Dachau Jew
and lie down in lime
with twisted limbs
and bloated pain
no mind can understand

. IL GENIO
Per te
sarò un ebreo apostata
e dirò al prete spagnolo
del voto di sangue
nel Talmud
e dove le ossa
del bambino sono nascoste
Per te
sarò un banchiere ebreo
e porterò alla rovina
un orgoglioso vecchio re cacciatore
e farò finire il suo lignaggio
Per te
sarò un ebreo di Broadway
e piangerò nei teatri
per mia madre
e venderò articoli d'occasione
sotto banco
Per te
sarò un dottore ebreo
e cercherò
in tutti i bidoni della spazzatura i prepuzi
per ricucirli nuovamente
Per te
sarò un ebreo di Dachau
e mi sdraierò nella calce
con arti contorti
e gonfio di un dolore
che nessuna mente può capire

...E per finire, una sua bella canzone: "Dance Me to the End of Love"
"Like a bird on a wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my way to be free." L.C., Bird on the Wire
